Hello,
Is it possible to protect a shared Folder with password on WinXP workgroup network? I don't want to use any third party programs to set password for that folder. Just want to use Windows original resources.

Please,..Please ... Please!

Regards,
Kyaw Myo

Hi bro,
As far as I know microsoft doesn't support password protected shared folders unless you zip them. But they provide file and folder level access restriction. So you must use share and NTFS permisson and assign the permisson to particular user that you created in user and group MMC.
The effective permission is combination of shared permisson and NTFS permission. Normally we provide full control access for everyone in shared permission and set the specific permission in NTFS permission.
For example if you want to give only read access for a folder to particular user,
Give full control for everyone at share permission and just give read permission at NTFS permission to this user.

In window xp, in order to give NTFS permission, you need to disable simple file sharing setting first.
I hope it will help you.
Correct me if I am wrong.

As a supplement: In order to Disable the simple file sharing,

3>unclick Simple File Sharing under Advanced Settings Pane

3rd party tools are more safer than ms folder.

If u want extreme security over files & folders on ur HDD, u can't rely on ms alone.

That ms file & folder permission stop working if somebody take ur hdd physically .... attach to another pc and gain permission via admin account.

maybe I'm totally nut!

Hi bro, you are totally right, some third party tools are more powerful than microsoft built in features. But if I am not wrong ,microsoft also provide encryption solution to prevent that kind of vulnerability on files and folder you are talking about.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Cheers

Yes EFS is sorta useful and seems secure (using certificate) but simple 3rd party tools like folderlock is more simple and user friendly than ms EFS.

Sorry I was gone offtopic here.

Hi bro, we are talking about this issue. You will be able to setup to prompt the log on box when network places is accessed. Not for single shared folder.

If you file system is NTFS and you disable the guest account, the log on screen will appear everytime when network resources is accessed. But this log on prompt will not be appeared next time unless user restart the PC or you delete the session manually at computer managment.

Only thing we can do on shared folder security is create the local user account, implement the NTFS permisson and shared permission for the network folders and assign specific permisson to each user.

Effective permission is the most restrictive permission of NTFS permission and shared permission.
For example..Full control on share permission and read permission on NTFS permisson. User will get only read access.

I use NTFS and disable simple file sharing. And share a folder and set read permission for a particular user and remove everyone on that folder. But when I accessed that folder from another computer in the local network, message box appeared that show "... not accessible.... access is denied" instead of login box. Anyway, thank you for your attention.

Hi Sayar Yan,
Sometime window's problems are quite weird. But try to access the network resources by typing UNC name like \\computername rather than accessing to the shared folder directly.
If you still get error message, try to disable anonymous log on in group policy.

Correct me if I am wrong.
