Let's talk about Linux

I mean , Linux OS !

Have you ever thought about how big the linux kernel is ?

Is it 600Mbytes ?

Is it 100Mbytes ?

or 40M ?

Nop! it is just about 1MBytes ( kernel 1.4.xx)
and about 1.5Mytes ( kernel 1.6.xx)

The figures I mentioned above are zip compressed kernels with default configured options used my most major linux distributors. Kernels are always zip-compressed so they are very small. They decompress themselves (get bigger) at the start of execution.

I think this topic makes Linux interesting enough for every system engineer.

To be continued...

To find out how big is the kernel is :

Turn on your linux box.

log in.

then enter

ls -l /boot

which will display kernel file
there may be more than one depending on the structure of linux distribution . Some files are softlinks so they only have just a few bytes. The actual kernel is normally named vmlinuz ...version....

In older versions, there may also be vmLinux which is the uncompressed version of vmLinuz.

Now have a look.

Dear Brother

>so u r talking abt linux kernel...
just sharing my experiences my brother

>i want to ask one thing concerned with the kernel...
I will help u if I get a chance and ...

>i will need to make modified AODV module for kernel.. we already have one AODV routing protocol in kernel.... cos i want to change it for my Reasearch...
fair enough !

> do u think it might be too hard...
lol! it is a BIG QUESTION Crying or Very sad
it depends. You have the chance to (hoping you will ) make it easy.

> if u have any good reference abt kernel modification....
I don't think you will need to modify kernel. I think you can modify just the kernel module and load it. ( that's why they call LKM,Loadable Kernel Module )

> let me know...

My personal suggestion :
Grab two classical Linux books:
1. Understanding the Linux Kernel
3rd edition ( which covers kernel 2.6 )
Daniel P. Bovet & Marco Cesati
O'reilly Books
2. Linux Device Drivers
3rd edition
Jonathan Corbet, Alessandro
Rubini, Greg Kroah-Hartman

( I have to read those books )

For web references :
www.kernelnewbies.org ( sorry if you are already an experienced guru )
w3.antd.nist.gov/wctg/aodv_kernel/ ( think you might know already )
